Little is known for certain about the origins of Morris dancing, but the earliest evidence of it dates from 1458. Records show that Morris dancing was a part of the entertainment in the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII. By Elizabeth I's rule, it had become a regular part of the processions at carnivals and on feast days. By the end of the Elizabethan period, Morris dancing was being frowned upon by the clergy. After the civil war in the 17th century, many populist customs, including Morris dancing, were outlawed by the Puritans. In 1899, Cecil Sharp, founder of the English Folk Dance Society, saw Morris dancing for the first time and decided to revive it. He traveled extensively, collecting dances, music, and information. From his research and notation, the Morris dancers of today are able to learn the steps and dances.}, keywords={Morris dance}, isbn={0011-6009}, language={English} } @article{RefWorks:240, author={Richard Wincor}, year={1950}, month={Oct}, title={Shakespeare's Festival Plays}, journal={Shakespeare Quarterly}, volume={1}, number={4}, pages={219-240}, note={Update: 000001}, keywords={English literature - 1500-1599 - Shakespeare, William (1564-1616) - romance - treatment of death - rebirth - sources in folk drama; folk rituals - folk drama - Europe - role of death - rebirth - influence on Shakespeare, William (1564-1616)}, isbn={0037-3222 SICI: 0037-3222(195010)1:4<219:SFP>2.0.CO;2-J}, language={English Peer Reviewed: Yes} } @article{RefWorks:23, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1980}, title={The Morris of Dean Forest: Glimpses of an Extinct Tradition}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={42}, number={1}, pages={16-17}, note={Update: 198301}, keywords={ethnomusicology - folk dance - morris dance - England}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:104, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1979}, title={The Bucknell Morris}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={41}, number={2}, pages={12-14}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197901}, keywords={ethnomusicology - folk dance - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:103, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1978}, title={Morris Workshop: The 'Stafford Morris'}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={40}, pages={101}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197901}, keywords={ethnomusicology - folk dance - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:126, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1977}, title={The Bucknell Tabors}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={39}, pages={116}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197701}, keywords={ethnomusicology - musical instruments - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:127, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1977}, title={Chromatic Tuning for Dulcimer as Used by Traditional Players in Norfolk}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={39}, pages={75}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197701}, keywords={ethnomusicology - musical instruments - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:128, author={Russell Wortley}, year={1974}, title={'A Penny for the Plough Boys'}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={36}, pages={23}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197601}, keywords={folk rituals - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:129, author={Russell Wortley and Michael Dawney}, year={1977}, title={George Butterworth's Diary of Morris Dance Hunting}, journal={Folk Music Journal}, volume={3}, pages={193-207}, note={Additional Info: London, N.W.1, England; Update: 197701}, keywords={ethnomusicology - folk dance - Europe; history and study of folklore - Europe}, isbn={0531-9684}, language={English Peer Reviewed: Yes} } @article{RefWorks:120, author={Russell Wortley and Cyril Papworth}, year={1978}, title={Molly Dancing in South-West Cambridgeshire}, journal={English Dance and Song}, volume={40}, pages={58-59}, note={Additional Info: London NW1 7AY, England; Update: 197801}, keywords={ethnomusicology - folk dance - Europe}, isbn={0013-8231}, language={English Peer Reviewed: No} } @article{RefWorks:167, author={Akihiro Yamada and Peter S.
